The two most renowned cannabinoids, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), provide distinct therapeutic effects. THC is known for its pain-relieving and psychoactive properties, making it one of the frequently prescribed products for chronic
pain management. In contrast, CBD is non-psychoactive and is known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and neuroprotective benefits. Addressing key health concerns
Based on TGA-reported data, the top three reasons for prescribing medicinal cannabis
are chronic pain, insomnia, and anxiety. Cannabis offers an effective alternative for pain management, reducing the risk of addiction and the side effects associated with opioids.
Notably, medicinal cannabis shows promise in helping patients reduce or eliminate their dependence on opioid-based painkillers, as confirmed by certain Australian GPs. In a self-reported study (n=2183) in Florida, findings indicate decreased opioid use without harming quality of life or health functioning. Additionally, medicinal cannabis has
demonstrated benefits in aged and palliative care, improving quality of life by alleviating pain, reducing nausea, and enhancing appetite.
